Week 1
First Class 8th Oct 2024
Today, Sustainable Development was the first ever class I had to attend for my second year in IIUM. KENMS was a little unfamiliar for me as I never had to attend any classes there but being a person with a good sense of direction, I managed to find my way without getting lost with the help of a digital map provided by Prof. Suhaimi. I arrived quite early and most of the faces there were strangers I'd never met, undoubtedly holding their journeys in their own life. Thankfully, I have two friends that I have already known since CFS- Yasmin and Alees or I probably won't have anyone to talk to since I'm a little shy around strangers. At the beginning of the class, we had a little ta'aruf session where we had to tell our classmates about ourselves. So, we had to share our names, courses, Kulliyahs, hometowns, and our former high schools. Also, we had to describe ourselves and SD in one word.
The later pieces of information that we had to share came off as kinda interesting for me as we could actually see someone's personality through their choice of words. I chose 'sentimental' as the word to describe me and 'Earth' to describe SD. Then, the class went on with us learning about the definition of SD, its evolution, its principles, etc. It would be boring to repeat in detail what we learned in this journal. So, I would be instead reflecting on the war that I had in my mind while I was being fed with input from the class. Throughout the class, I came with the realization that humans are very ungrateful and greedy. That is the reality. Eventhough it was supposed to be our responsibility for us humans as khalifah, most of us neglect that when we are given a place to live. A place where there's water, oxygen and lands to live on. But, we are the ones who cause destruction on Earth.
Hence, I think that Sustainable Development is necessary and critically significant to improve and ameliorate without affecting or minimizing the negative effects on Earth. That is why humans should always evolve and aspire to think and learn more and more everyday to find ways to promote development in the right ways. Perhaps, all of this could be achieved if all parties and individuals especially those with powers come together and unite to find the solutions to it. The voices of the people should also be heard and taken into account as powerless people would always get trampled on more and small matters as such should also not be ignored.

happy first day of class!
