Week 6

University's Roles in Sustainable Development           12th Nov 2024

Attending the recent online lecture on the roles of universities in sustainable development provided me with a deeper understanding of how educational institutions can actively contribute to a more sustainable future. Guided by the Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan, the emphasis on holistic development—encompassing intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical growth—resonates strongly with the concept of sustainability. This philosophy ties seamlessly with the broader goals of creating not just knowledgeable individuals but also responsible global citizens capable of addressing contemporary challenges. As part of the lecture, we were tasked with identifying places on campus that align with sustainable development principles. My group chose the HS Dry Cafe, a space that embodies several sustainability values. Reflecting on its role, I realized how even a simple cafe can contribute meaningfully to sustainability efforts.

The lecture also highlighted the reasons to learn: learning to know, to do, to live together, to be, and to become. I see these principles reflected in the role of the HS Dry Cafe:

  1. Learning to Know: By observing how the cafe operates sustainably, I’ve learned the importance of integrating eco-conscious practices into everyday operations.

  2. Learning to Do: The cafe exemplifies action, showing that small steps—like managing waste or providing affordable meals—can make a significant difference.

  3. Learning to Live Together: The inclusive nature of the space fosters a sense of community, where all students can gather and feel represented.

  4. Learning to Be: The cafe inspires me to think about my role in sustainability, prompting questions about how I can adopt more sustainable practices in my life.

  5. Learning to Become: Observing these efforts motivates me to contribute to a more sustainable campus and community.

This reflection reinforced my belief that sustainability is not just about grand policies but also about small, consistent efforts that make a difference. Spaces like HS Dry Cafe are a testament to how universities can lead by example, embodying the very principles they teach. Going forward, I feel inspired to seek out other campus initiatives that promote sustainable development. This exercise has also encouraged me to think critically about how I can personally contribute—whether through reducing waste, supporting inclusive spaces, or raising awareness about sustainability among my peers. Universities, as hubs of knowledge and innovation, are uniquely positioned to lead the charge toward a more sustainable future. As students, we play an integral part in amplifying these efforts, ensuring that the lessons we learn today translate into meaningful action tomorrow.
